10:36 PM 9/27/1997 Airplane festival excites thousands By CARLOS BYARS Copyright 1997 Houston Chronicle Their faces turned toward a flawless, pale-blue sky, airplane fans young and old watched with delight as the 13th annual Wings Over Houston Airshow Festival unfolded Saturday at Ellington Field. Squinting and blinking against the sun, an estimated 35,000 people saw aerobatics featuring classic planes of the past and the first-line team of the U.S. Air Force, the Thunderbirds with their ear-shattering F-16 Fighting Falcons. Between aerial exhibits, which included a striking display by the U.S. Navy sky-diving team, many fans strolled from historic plane to historic plane in the war bird collection of the Confederate Air Force. The show continues today, and officials estimate 45,000 people will attend. The gates open at 8 a.m. Aerial demonstrations begin at 10 a.m. Special events include the Thunderbirds, the Red Baron Stearman Squadron, an aerobatics team; the Navy and Re/Max sky-diving teams and the annual Tora! Tora! Tora! re-creation of the attack on Pearl Harbor. A new event this year is the husband-and-wife team of Daniel Heligoin and Montaine Mallet in the French Connection aerobatic duet. The Pearl Harbor attack involves an entire row of "Japanese" aircraft, carefully re-created, mostly from old Air Force and Navy trainers. Bob Covington of Conroe, standing beside a Japanese dive bomber owned by the Confederate Air Force, said he is a sponsor pilot. He gets to clean the plane, maintain it and spend all his money on it. "In exchange, I get to fly it," Covington said. And he seemed happy with the deal. Bill Gregg of Graham is another aviator involved with war birds. He is the tail gunner on a SB2C Helldiver, a World War II-era Navy dive bomber. Gregg explained that 7,200 of the planes were built, and this is the last one flying. "It was built right at the end of the war and never saw combat," Gregg said. Instead, for 12 years, the Navy used the plane to tow targets for reconnaissance and as a trainer. The Confederate Air Force bought the plane, which crashed in 1983. Although little was left other than the wings, Gregg said the group's Texas Wing spent four years rebuilding the plane piece by hand-crafted piece. Calvin Ardies and his friend Bobby Lane said they wanted to see a P-38 (they weren't sure what it was called, but described it very well) and a Stealth bomber. Unfortunately the show had neither. Scott Cichorz of La Porte and his son Jason were among many who braved long lines for a ride in one of the show's flight simulators. Cichorz said their simulated flight down a canyon was worth the wait. "It was cool," said young Jason, which is a decent way to sum up the whole show. |
Jason,
We love you not because of who you are, but because of who we are when we are with you..
No man or woman is worth your tears, and the one who is, won't make you cry. Just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to, doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have. A true friend is someone who reaches for your hand and touches your heart. The worst way to miss someone is to be sitting right beside them knowing you can't have them. Never frown, even when you are sad, because you never know who is falling in love with your smile. To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world. Don't waste your time on a man/woman, who isn't willing to waste their time on you. Maybe God wants us to meet a few wrong people before meeting the right one, so that when we finally meet the person, we will know how to be grateful. Don't cry because it is over, smile because it happened. There's always going to be people that hurt you so what you have to do is keep on trusting and just be more careful about who you trust next time around. Make yourself a better person and know who you are before you try to know someone else and expect them to know you. Don't try so hard, the best things come when you least expect them. REMEMBER: WHATEVER HAPPENS, HAPPENS FOR A REASON. True friends: How many people actually have 8 true friends? Hardly anyone I know except you Jason! Peace my brother. ![]() |
